Theories of organizing resources; rationale and use of library catalogs; principles and practice in classification and cataloging applied to information organizations; technical processing and organization resources; managing collections and their access.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):
2: Synthesize leadership principles within the practice of information and educational technology.
3: Apply instructional design principles to locate, evaluate and develop educational materials.
4: Integrate theoretical perspectives to review, interpret, and apply research in learning technology.
6: Design, develop, implement, and assess learning experiences.
8: Organize collections according to standard library cataloging and classification principles.
Reflection:
In this course we learned about how to properly process and organize the various resources that may go into a library. This included but was not limited to completing RDA and MARC records for 10 different resources, completing a system comparison of two Library Management Systems (LMSs), and evaluating the processing polices an procedures of another library. The way the course was established we regularly revisited many of the themes of the course which made them more memorable for later recall and use. Each assignment only helped in embedding the lessons further into my mind. As a current school librarian this was the course I got the most out of besides the field experience. I left this course feeling better prepared for the job I have and ready to explore new avenues.
Artifacts:
Process Assessment - Ralston Intermediate (SLOs 2 & 8)
Students were required to visit a library staffed by a credentialed librarian and report on the technical processing of books is handled at that site. This would include placement of barcodes, stamps, spine labels, and much more. Additionally we created a flow chart of the process showing from beginning to end how the process is completed from arrive to withdrawal. Lastly, we reflected on our findings and on what processes or policies from that site we would wish to use in our own site or would change.
Systems Comparison - Destiny vs. Atriuum (SLOs 2 & 8)
Comparing of two integrated library managment systems (LMSs) including a description of using on system.
Lesson Plan - Library Lesson Plan (SLOs 3, 4, & 6)
Assess a lesson to aid students, faculty, or staff in location all library materials and resources. Then improve it through adapting it to your site. Include provisions for diverse students.
